A breakthrough has been reached in the tragic case of Alberta 'Bety' Cariño Trujillo and Finnish human rights activist Jyri Jaakkola. Both were killed in an ambush on 27th April 2010 while participating in a humanitarian convoy bound for the indigenous community of San Juan Copala .

On 21st January 2015 Elias Cruz Merino, leader of the Movement for Triqui Unification and Struggle (MULT) was arrested as one of their alleged killers. However, there are still ten more outstanding warrants to be made. Since last April the National Association of Democratic Lawyers reported that those responsible for these acts were fully identified, however the Mexican government has refused to implement the corresponding arrest warrants.

This is a first small step in the right direction but justice for these murders has not been reached yet.

LASC supports the struggle for justice led by the family of Bety' Cariño and Jyri Jaakkola and many other organisation.
